Drive The Golf Ball Further With More Control

Working with clients and talking with them about their weekly activities usually leads to golf, general topics include how bad the game was, how much further someone was hitting the ball, or occasionally how good the day was or even a broken window. One topic that almost always comes up is driving distance and control, there is nothing better when walking up to the tee than knowing that you are going to out drive all of your golf buddies AND put the ball right down the middle of the fairway! Here are some workout drills to give your brain that required confidence and train your body to get the task done!

Impact Zone Strength of Dominate Arm
Note: The term dominate arm refers to the type of golf club you use, right or left handed.

Attach a length of exercise tube or theraband to a solid object. The tube should be attached at your waist height when you are in your golf stance.
Stand with your dominate arm closest to where the band is attached, take one end of the band in the dominate hand, keep this in front of the body, take the other end of the band in the off hand and place this behind the body resting on the lower back or hip area.
Move away from the band until tension in the band is developed, this is how you can vary the load during your training.
Using your coordinated swing pattern and arm extension (minus your non dominate arm) move the dominate arm from around the 8 o-clock position through the impact zone to the 5 o-clock position. The non dominate arm should remain on the hip or lower back creating a twisting moment on the core.
Repeat this movement 12-15 times focusing on the feeling and form through the impact zone. To balance the exercise switch arms and repeat the work if desired.

Core Function and Control

Attach a length of exercise tube or theraband to a solid object. The tube should be attached at your shoulder height when you are standing erect with a very minor knee bend.
Place the feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Grasp the band with both hands and extend the arms horizontal from the shoulder. Have the feet facing 90 degrees away from the band attach point. Move away from the band attach point and let the arms be pulled to the band attach point allowing the core to twist so the shoulders now fact the attach point.
Twisting through the core while trying to minimize lower body and pelvis movement rotate the arms from facing the band attach point to the opposite side of the body. Keep the torso upright and erect throughout the twist. Focus on feeling the movement and logging it in your brain. Hands should move in a constant plane around the spine extended from the shoulders.
Repeat 12 - 15 times then switch the direction of loaded rotation to balance the exercise.

Swing Speed and Swing Plane Control

Grab a medicine ball or kettle ball, the weight of the ball can be increased as you progress.Assume a standing position with feet shoulder width apart. Prepare to do walking lunges. (do not be facing into a wall or equipment) Allow the ball to hang in the crotch area with hands on either side of the ball.Take a lunge step, while going into the lunge twist the core of the body to the forward leg, this twist should move the ball from the starting point to a point directly out from the forward leg side ear. The ball should move upward and outward during the twist of the core. As you come out of the lunge move the ball back to the starting point near the crotch.Repeat the same movement on the other leg.Repeat 8-10 times for each leg.

Muscle Memory for Weight Transfer

Find a two dimension (side to side) balance board.
Assume a position on the board to simulate your golf stance at addressing the ball before a swing.
Simulate a golf club using a club or other device.
Attempt to balance weight on the board at address.
Rotate into your swing takeaway. As you take away your weight should transfer on to the back foot, that side of the board should move down onto the ground.
Rotate through the impact zone to the follow through. The board should now have flipped to touching the ground on the front foot. Repeat this drill paying close attention to the timing of the weight transfer to the forward foot. The weight should transfer to the forward foot just as the club passes through the impact zone.
Repeat focusing on the transfer of weight timing versus the club head location in the impact zone.

Drive The Ball Farther

Every golfer wants to hit it past their golfing buddies off the tee. Having a powerful golf swing and hitting long drives makes the game easier and more enjoyable. I'm here to give you some tips on how to gain some more distance off the tee.

My first word of advice starts with the setup position. When hitting the driver, you want to setup to the ball with your spine tilted slightly away from the ball. This helps you to hit the golf ball on the upswing which translates into greater distance because of a decreased spin rate and better launch angle. With this altered spine angle, you will want a wide stance and you want to play the ball towards your front foot. You need a wide stance to act as a stable base for the long and fast swing you make with the driver. You also want to play the ball towards your front foot to catch the ball on the upswing. I suggest playing the ball just inside of your left heel. This setup position also means that you are going to have approximately 60% of your weight distribution on your right foot.

My second tip is to keep your lower body movement very quiet as you rotate your upper body. This movement creates a lot of torque, which means when you do start your downswing you can unwind your upper body quickly to create maximum clubhead speed. This requires flexibility to achieve, which may mean that you will need to work on your flexibility at the gym or in your home during free time. The best areas to stretch to achieve this movement are your lower back muscles and hip flexors.

A third key is to swing the club faster, not harder. What I mean by this is to try to gain more clubhead speed by making sure the sequence of your movements is correct and you stay in balance. When most golfers try to hit the ball farther they try to hit the ball harder, which usually results in an errant shot because they have fallen off balance or tried to throw their hands through impact. This always results in an errant shot because your natural timing and rhythm is thrown off. It should feel like you are swinging smoother, which also gives you a better chance of hitting the ball on the sweet spot of the club and result in more distance.

Finally, don't rule out the need for a new driver. Technology is advancing in drivers very quickly and you do not want to have a driver that has inferior technology. There are many golf courses and golf retail shops that will fit you for a driver. Getting fit for a driver is a pretty simple and quick process. You go through different driver head and shaft combinations to find the perfect setup that gives you the right amount of spin, launch angle, etc.

How to Hit a Flop Shot

First of all, do not ever hit a flop shot unless it is your last and only option to get the ball near the hole. The flop shot is an extremely difficult shot to pull off and control, so I recommend exploring all options before settling on a flop shot from around the green. If there is any way to run the ball up to and on the green I would suggest hitting a chip or pitch shot. The only times when a flop shot is advisable is when you have an obstacle between your ball and the hole, such as a bunker, water hazard, tree, etc. and you have little green to land on and let your ball roll towards the hole.

To execute a flop shot you need to take into consideration many variables. First, you are going to need to examine the lie of your golf ball. This is very important because you are going to play the shot differently if you are in short grass, long grass, buried in rough, etc. If you have a clean lie in short grass you will be able to put more spin on the ball which will help the ball stop once it hits the green. If you have a buried lie in the rough you won't be able to impart spin on the ball and will have to allow for your ball to roll out once it hits the green. Once you have figured out what kind of lie you have, you will want to walk up to the green to see how much putting surface there is between the edge of the green and the hole, you will also want to look at the contours of the green to see where your ball will roll once it lands on the green. Lastly, take a look at what is in between you and the green. If there is a water hazard or bunker there, you may want to think about erring on the side of hitting the ball too far to make sure you get over the hazard. The last thing you want to do when you short-side yourself near the green is compound a mistake and throw away more shots.

After surveying the situation and determining what severity of flop shot that is needed, it is time to setup to the ball and execute. To set up for a flop shot you are going to want to open your body so that everything aligns to the left of the target. You will play the ball just ahead of the middle of your stance and take a fairly wide stance because you want a solid base for the swing and it helps get you lower to the ground which will help open the clubface. Turn the toe of the club towards your back foot (to the right for a right handed golfer) so that the club face is in an open position, this adds loft to the club so that you can hit a high and soft shot. The next two adjustments are the key to hitting good flop shots. The first is when you turn that clubface open, make sure to take your hands off the grip and re-position them as if you were normally gripping the club. If you fail to do this you will essentially be gripping the club as if it were square because you haven't moved your hands at all. The second adjustment is to pull your hands back toward your back hip. This again adds loft to the clubface and helps you hit the ball high. Your hands will be behind the ball after this adjustment, which goes against almost everything taught in golf but it is allowed for only flop shots. The key, though, is that your hands will be back in front of the clubhead and ball when you are at impact because you want to strike the ball with a descending blow.

Now that we are setup, it's time to make a swing. You will need to vary the length of the swing depending on how far and high you want to hit the ball. Always make sure you are accelerating through impact. It also helps to take the club back to the outside of your hands because that will again add loft to the clubface. You are going to need to break your wrists and hinge them quite a bit to get clubhead speed and hold the clubface open through impact to send the ball high in the air. Swing the clubhead along your body line, which is aimed left of the target because the open clubface will send the ball off to the right of where you are swinging (for right handed golfers). At impact you will want to feel like you are sliding under the ball with an open clubface. Be sure to finish your swing and hopefully, if everything goes well you will be watching your ball fly high in the air towards the hole over all the hazards in front of you.

How To Recover From Bad Shots In Golf

How often have you found your game deteriorating after you hit that first bad shot? You were out there, hitting balls nice and sweetly, holing out well, mentally calculating your score and feeling pretty good. Then, out pops that stray shot, seemingly from nowhere, and it triggers a downward spiral.

We've all been there, and we've watched professionals fighting that same tendency. Sometimes you win that fight and at other times you lose. The question that remains is how can you take control of these situations and maximize your ability to ensure that you win more frequently and no longer allow one bad shot to trigger a whole truck load of baddies?

The thing about golf is that no matter how perfectly you hit the ball on the range, playing on the course presents an entirely different challenge. The lies are anything but flat and straightforward. Balls can be sitting there on lies that are downhill, uphill, sideways, lumpy, bumpy, deep in rough, plugged in sand, shaded by trees, deep in the undergrowth, and so on.

The courses themselves are set up in such a way so as to create optical illusions and correct alignment is no longer a simple matter. And then there's competition pressure, wind, rain...you name it, there's a load more to contend with when you are actually out there on the course. Your perfect swing will only hold up to the same degree as your mind holds up.

When you're on the range and you hit a bad shot you don't get upset. You're there to practice, there to learn. You expect a few bad shots. And you can hit one ball after another and so quickly replace in your mind any bad ones with a series of great ones. This enables you to walk away from the range feeling pretty good with yourself.

The golf course is a different matter. You hit a bad shot and you can get upset. You don't get a chance to replay it and replace the memory of that bad shot. Or do you?

You see, this is a big part of the mental game of golf. The ability to commit the memory of bad shots to your mental trash can and replace it with a strong visual image of a perfect shot is the key to recovering well from a bad golf shot.

In this way, you don't give in to the natural instinct to get upset. You remain calm and in control of your thoughts, focus and emotions. This enables you to be present and fully in control for your next shot. It stops you from dwelling on the past bad shot and chewing on it like a bone.

Being present is hugely important. If you aren't fully aware of what you are doing how can you possibly do it well? It's possible too, that when you think back, you might discover the reason why you hit that bad shot in the first place was because you were not absolutely present.

Your mind might not have been 100% engrossed in the task of hitting that ball. You might not have been 100% committed. You might even have been busy thinking about that card which was beginning to burn a hole in your golf brain!

Golf may well be more mechanical than mental whilst you are on the range. But as soon as you even contemplate setting foot upon the first tee box this game turns out to be almost entirely mental. If you want to be a good golfer you have to conquer both the mechanical and the mental aspects of this challenging game.

How Your Golf Divots Can Help You Improve Your Golf Swing Path

Noticing and understanding the direction and type of your divots on the golf course can help you improve your swing path. Generally, most golfers will take divots if they have decent swing speeds. Some golfers take shallow divots and some take really huge ones. I'm going to share with you some tips on how to improve your swing by noticing what type of divots you are taking.

With your tee shots and fairway woods you shouldn't be taking divots. Hopefully with these clubs you are catching the ball slightly on the upswing. With the irons, it's helpful to hit down on the ground so you most likely will take at least a little bit of a divot if you are swinging correctly with these clubs.

Good divots should always be in front of the golf ball. With your irons, you want to strike the golf ball first and then take some ground with your club. The perfect divot will be shallow and consistent. The touring pros all take similar divots when they hit different shots. Amateur golfers with high handicaps may be more inconsistent in the amount of ground they take from hitting down on the golf ball.

If your divots are pointing left, you are pulling the club across on your golf swing path from right to left. This will cause a sliced golf shot or a pulled shot. If the divots are pointing to the right, you're probably experiencing a block or even a hook golf shot pattern. To combat these two problems, try and feel like you swing your golf club head towards the target just after impact. This will promote straighter shots and you'll tend to take divots that go straight.

Deep divots mean that your golf swing path or plane is too steep. A golfer who has a flatter swing plane will tend to take more shallow divots. Noticing the direction and how deep your divots are can give you basic information on your golf swing path as well as your golf swing plane.

The Stress of Competitive Junior Golf on Young Players

Adults face a myriad of different stressors on any given day - family, work, financial, health etc. Since most of our junior golfers don't have to deal with these issues, it can be easy to sometimes forget the stressors of both being a teenager in general and a competitive junior golfer. The stress of the modern day teenager is beyond the scope of this article, but I would like to address how the world of junior golf can be a source of stress for our kids, and offer some potential techniques and suggestions to help them deal with it.


Stress has many definitions, but for our purposes we will focus on how our junior golfer experiences and internalizes the conditions (real or imagined) of golf, and how it affects him/her both on and off the golf course. All kids are unique, so what might cause stress for one, will not even be noticed by his friend. However, there are a few common issues that I see with a large percentage of junior golfers:

Putting pressure on themselves to play to a high levelFeeling pressure from their parents to play to a high level (not intentional by the parents). The physical and mental demands of practice. Less time to spend with friends

It is important to discuss these topics (and any others that you suspect) with your junior golfer, and assist them in relieving the stress in productive and healthy ways, before they become a problem that manifests itself in physical symptoms. The symptoms of "stress overload" in juniors can include irritability, anger, sadness (even to the point of tears), signs of depression, isolation, a drop in school performance, etc.


Here are a few options for stress relief:


1. Visualization - there are many techniques that help juniors to relax and begin to recognize that despite how it may seem, everything will be OK. These include guided sessions that they can listen to daily on Cd or MP3s with their headsets.


2. Positive Self-Talk - negative self-talk is common among juniors, and can be very destructive. Teach your junior to be kind to themselves.


3. Deep Breathing - shallow "chest breathing" creates tension in the neck and shoulders. Teach your junior to breath with the diaphragm (into the belly).


4. Ensuring proper nutrition, hydration and sleep (8-10 hours a night!)


Recognizing the source of the stress and talking about it is the first vital step. Then you can work with your junior golfer on ways to feel better, play better and enjoy the sport.

Number 1 Secret to Conquering the Golf Course: Divide and Conquer on Every Hole

Many golfers never stop to really analyze a golf course or break down each hole into what they really are.


Most players show up with a bag full of clubs, start at hole #1 play to hole #18 using a driver on everything but the par 3s and swinging the club without ever picking a target (except on your putts). Sound familiar. Yeah I know... I've been there too.


That is until a PGA pro taught me to pick the course apart hole by hole to make even the longest par 5s nothing more than a series of short shots (you don't have to gun for the green every time).


3 Steps to Break Down Golf Holes and Slash Your Scores:

The first step is looking at the tee box yardage sign or score card to see how long the hole is and where the hazards are. This may seem a bit simplistic but stay with me.
Next you should think about what golf clubs you are hitting consistently. For many high handicap golfers that list doesn't include the driver all the time. Who cares if you aren't hitting your driver well, you can easily make birdie with a three wood (or even a 5 wood for that matter).
Only use golf clubs you are hitting well (remember golf is a mental game, if you didn't hit it well on the range you probably won't hit it well on the course). It is okay to use an unconventional club off the tee box or on the fairway.

You can make par or even birdie on a par 5 without ever taking the head cover off your driver.


Take a 450 yard par 5 for example: it can be broken down many ways. Lets divide 450 by three (if you are on the green in three you are putting for birdie). 450/3 = 150 so you only have to hit the ball 150 yards and straight three times to get on the green and putting for birdie. Heck, you could do that with a seven iron easily.


Your buddies may snicker when you tee up a seven iron but they won't be laughing when you are putting for birdie while they are putting for boggy.


What Clubs to Use:


Don't worry I'm not saying that you throw away your driver or leave it at home, but golf clubs are nothing more than tools. And if you aren't hitting your driver well on a particular day you should consider that tool broken.


The course is not the place to try to 'fix' your swing that's what the range is for (I learned that one the hard way).


A carpenter wouldn't use a broken circular saw to cut a board just because that's what he would usually do, he would take it over to the table saw or a miter saw to get the job done.


Think about your clubs the same way. If it's broken don't use it until you get it fixed (on the range). And most of us always have at least one club in the bag that we hit well all the time. Don't be afraid to use it even if it goes against convention.

Tips on How to Break 90

Scoring Strategy


Play each hole to make a bogey. You will certainly make just a few pars by doing this (plus some double bogeys in the process whenever you hit some bad shots), but by playing each hole for your bogey you can expect to eliminate the big numbers (7s and 8s).


Even "par" for you should be 90, play to get yourself a 45 each 9. That's 4s on the par 3s, 5s on the par 4s and 6s on the par 5s. Just steady, safe golf but when you get a "green" light (which we'll speak about below) aim for the flag and get a par.


Golf course Management


From the tee


Play the club off of the tee that will get the ball in play the most often. For me it's my driver. The ball is teed up, the head is the dimensions of a frying pan, it's impossible to top or chunk the driver.


Swing it easy together with good tempo and you'll be in the fairway. Swinging easy will take away the duck hook and the banana slice. You do not have to hit long drives; you need your ball in play down the fairway. Anything over 180 yards is wonderful because bear in mind, you are playing each hole for bogey, so you don't need to triumph over the fairway in two shots.


In the event you don't like the driver, then select a hybrid 3, 4 or 5 iron. If you don't own a hybrid, put that on your birthday/Christmas, good person present list.


In the fairway


If you are breaking 100 routinely, I'm guessing you have got a go to iron. The one you hit to loosen up at the range, the one you hit to learn your swing, the one you keep close to your bed for defense. For many people that's commonly their 6, 7 or 8 iron. Something you are able to strike 145-160 yards easily. For me it's my 7 iron.


>150 yards from the hole?
Hit your 150 yard club. The reasoning behind this is that you'll be able to control that club, so that you can now position your 2nd shot along the side of the fairway (or green) that is great for your 3rd shot (either a pitch, chip or putt).


<150 yards from the hole?
If you have no real danger along the side of the green where your misses go or no danger behind the green, go for it, you have a green light to shoot for the center/largest section of the green.


If you find hazard on your miss side, and no threat in front of the green, play One club less and shoot for the front of the green.


<100 yards away from the hole?
Aim for the centre of the green, you've struck a superb tee shot, and therefore are in a good position. You need to have this shot in your toolbox. If you can't regularly get close to or on the green from 100 yards away (7 out of 10), you need to train your wedge more.


Short game


To break 90, you've got to be capable to hit the green from 75 yards and in. This stands out as the one area of the game that is the easiest to learn because it doesn't require a perfect golf swing or very much athletic skill. It basically requires some training to get consistency and confidence.


Most greens are around 20-30 yards in width and 20-30 yards in depth. This gives you a lot of room for error; so don't try to get cute with your wedge shot. Just simply aim for the biggest spot of the green that is closest to the hole and you'll be amazed at how many you put close.


I really do not encourage using a lob wedge for this shot. Go with your sand wedge (56 degree). With your sand wedge, in the event you hit it just a little short of the green, there'll be enough roll that the majority of occasions it will roll on and you're putting. Your lob wedge is just too easy to hit short and also to strike thin. I highly recommend eliminating it from your bag until you are consistently breaking 90.


Just 10-20% of golf players are ever going to break 90, therefore, you will be in rare company once you do.
